O atol de Fakarava situa-se na Polinésia Francesa, no arquipélago de Tuamotu. Trata-se de um banco de areia com cerca de 130 quilómetros de extensão, com palmeiras ao longo da costa. Este paraíso na terra – é Reserva Mundial da Biosfera, um estatuto atribuído pela UNESCO –, atravessa as “Graveyard stories”, escritas por Robert Louis Stevenson, em finais do século XIX, durante as suas viagens pelos Mares do Sul, realizadas para recuperar de problemas respiratórios. Num desses textos encontra-se a seguinte passagem: “Quando os vivos comem os mortos, a imaginação nocturna horrificada concebeu a inferência chocante que os mortos podem comer os vivos. Sem dúvida, eles matam homens, sem dúvida, mesmo, mutilam-nos por mera malícia. Os espíritos das Marquesas por vezes arrancam os olhos dos viajantes, mas mesmo isso pode ser mais prático do que parece, pois o olho é uma guloseima canibal.”<br>
Esta “requintada expressão” não escapou a um outro autor, Georges Bataille. Na entrada dedicada ao “Olho”, que escreveu para o “Dicionário Crítico”, o escritor francês, depois de esclarecer nunca o ter conseguido trincar, escreve: “O olho chega a ocupar no horror um lugar extremamente elevado por ser, entre outras coisas, o ‘olho da consciência’.” E prossegue: “É bastante conhecido o poema de Victor Hugo, o olho obsessivo e lúgubre, olho vivo e pavorosamente imaginado por Grandville durante o pesadelo que pouco antecedeu a sua morte.”<br>
Nesse instante de angústia, um criminoso é perseguido, desde um bosque até ao fundo dos mares por um olho que, qual “deus ex machina”, surge do negrume do céu. O assassino acaba por ser devorado, multiplicando-se os olhos sob as ondas. Voltando um pouco atrás no texto, Bataille afirma, sem hesitações: “Com efeito, a respeito do olho parece impossível pronunciar-se outra palavra que não seja sedução, pois nada é mais atraente do que ele no corpo dos animais e dos homens. Porém, a sedução extrema provavelmente fica situada no limite do horror.”<br>

Na exposição de João Jacinto coloca-se sobretudo a questão “o que resta do olhar?”, quando há muito assistimos ao vazamento dos olhos – pelo menos desde Tirésias, que perdeu a vista por vingança de Hera –, e num tempo em que as vendas servem um pouco para tudo: do sexo à morte. A obra deste artista fala-nos exactamente desse nivelamento dos extremos, que hoje se oferecem ao nosso testemunho sobretudo em experiências mediadas por um ecrã. Nas suas obras, sejam pinturas, sejam desenhos, uma palavra – lenha – pode equivaler-se a um olho, a um saco de plástico, a um furo na superfície do papel. E na actual exposição esse mesmo substantivo – lenha – para além de lhe dar o título, agarra essa combustão que une todas as visões que se cruzam: a do artista connosco, a da obra com o espectador, a do público com cada trabalho exposto. É um exercício feito de sacrifícios, pois ninguém fica confortável com aquilo que assiste: objectos nascidos do carvão e da tinta aplicados em gestos contaminados pela passagem do tempo.<br>
Escolhidas no seu ateliê – uma cave onde a poesia e a arte coabitam no mesmo chão invadido de tintas, poeiras e um repetitivo mosaico de azulejos –, numa selecção depois corrigida para melhor se sublinhar a tensão entre os olhos, o olhar e a matéria plástica que cola uma extremidade à outra, as obras agora apresentadas traduzem sobretudo esses instantes – íamos escrever estados de alma, mas pareceu-nos abusiva essa pretensão em fazer uma analogia entre as representações pictóricas e a vida interior de um sujeito, pois existe sempre essa capacidade de nos distanciarmos de nós mesmos – nos quais João Jacinto procura agarrar a visão ou antes as visões: de si, dos outros, do mundo. E, através desse combustível, faz com que tudo seja incinerado, cremado: a História da Pintura – Goya e Velázquez à cabeça –, os desejos – os do próprio artista, os do curador, os do público, que procura um sentido para aquilo que lhe é dado a ver –, a vida, ela mesma.<br>
Há esta maneira negra, este olhar mortífero, que emerge desta exposição. Uma passagem de “Massa e poder”, de Elias Canetti, pode ajudar a aproximar-nos dela: “Se ao menos isto ou aquilo ardesse por completo.” O escritor de origem búlgara acrescenta: “… o sentimento de que está tudo a olhar para ela. É isso que ela quer, pois assim ela própria se transforma no fogo que as pessoas estão a mirar.” De quem se fala aqui? Uma resposta possível seria: da própria arte, que tem essa capacidade de nos mudar.<br>
Uma guloseima canibal, portanto, estas obras que, depois de acolherem a cinza, o pó, continuam a queimar o olhar. São retratos e auto-retratos em brasa, muitas vezes deformados ao ponto de se tornarem irreconhecíveis: neles podemos ver monstruosidades, reflexos, vários espelhamentos. No fim, nada mais do que olhos, esse petisco de que nos falam Stevenson e Bataille. Dessa incandescência negra surge um enorme vazio, espécie de vítreo humor, que deixa espaço para aplacar o horror vivido na proximidade da morte. É nessa espécie de consolação metafísica, possível de vislumbrar através de furos e rasgões, de apressados riscos e subtis cores, que, quase sem nos darmos conta, nos percebemos do destino da arte, do nosso fim. Ali, ao alcance do nosso olhar, conduzidos pela mão do artista, vislumbramos, indistintos, o horror e a extrema sedução. In that moment of anguish, a criminal is pursued, from a wood to the bottom of the seas by an eye that, like "deus ex machina", rises from the blackness of the sky. The killer ends up being devoured, multiplying his eyes under the waves. Going back a bit in the text, Bataille states, without hesitation: "For the eye seems impossible to utter any word other than seduction, for nothing is more attractive than it in the bodies of animals and men. However, extreme seduction is probably situated on the edge of horror. “<br>

In João Jacinto's show the question is mostly "what remains from the gaze?”, when we have long seen the leaking of the eyes - at least since Tiresias, who lost his sight for Hera’s revenge -, and at a time where the sales serve a bit for everything: from sex to death. The work of this artist tells us exactly of this flatness of the extremes, which today are offered to our testimony mainly in experiences mediated by a screen. In his works, be they paintings, drawings, a word - firewood - can be equivalent to an eye, a plastic bag, a hole in the surface of the paper. And in the present exhibition, the same noun - firewood (Lenha) - besides giving it the title, grabs that combustion that unites all the visions that cross each other: that of the artist with us, that of the work with the spectator, the audience with each work being shown. It is an exercise made of sacrifices, because nobody is comfortable with what they see: objects born of coal and paint applied in gestures contaminated by the passage of time.<br>
Chosen in his atelier - a basement where poetry and art cohabit on the same ground invaded by paints, dust and a repetitive mosaic of tiles - in a selection later corrected to better underline the tension between the eyes, the look and the plastic material which glues one end to the other, the works now presented mainly reflect these moments - we were going to write states of soul, but this pretension seemed to us to make an analogy between the pictorial representations and the inner life of a subject, since there is always that capacity to distance ourselves from ourselves - in which João Jacinto seeks to grasp the vision or rather the visions: of oneself, of others, of the world. And through this fuel, makes everything being cremated: the History of Painting - Goya and Velázquez at the head -, the desires - those of the artist himself, those of the curator, those of the public, that seeks a meaning for what it is given to see -, life, herself. <br>
There is this dark way, this deadly look, which emerges from this exhibition. A passage from Elias Canetti's "Crowds and Power" can help us approach it: "If only it would burn." The writer of Bulgarian origin adds: “Her s accusation results from her feeling that everyone is watching her. She likes this feeling and, through it, transforms herself into the fire that people are watching.” Whom do you talk about here? One possible answer would be: of art itself, which has this ability to change us.</span><br>
<span style="font-family:lucida sans unicode,lucida grande,sans-serif">A cannibalistic dainty, therefore, these works that, after receiving the ash, the dust keep on burning the look. They are portraits and self-portraits on flames, often deformed to the point of becoming unrecognisable: in them we can see monstrosities, reflections, various mirrors. In the end, nothing more than eyes, that snack that Stevenson and Bataille told us about. From this dark incandescence comes an enormous emptiness, a kind of vitreous humor, which leaves space to slow down the horror lived in the proximity of death. It is in that kind of metaphysical consolation, capable of being glimpsed through holes and tears, hurried scratches and subtle colours, which, almost without realising it, we perceive the destiny of art, of our end. There, within the reach of our gaze, driven by the artist's hand, we glimpse, indistinct, the horror and the extreme seduction.
