A letra “X” assumiu enquanto símbolo diferentes significados ao longo da história e tem a capacidade de ser simultaneamente ambígua e incisiva. Desde significar uma parte incerta no território, a letra “X” esteve sempre associada ao desconhecido, sendo mais utilizada para a marcação de um erro. Por exemplo, em 1637 René Descartes publicou “La Geometrie” onde associava as letras a, b e c às constantes e as letras x, y e z às variáveis desconhecidas. Outro exemplo poderá ser a marcação de um “X” como assinatura por aquele que não sabe escrever, significando tanto individualidade como anonimato. Geração X foi assim apelidada por Robert Capa à geração nascida no pós-Segunda Guerra Mundial por se tratar de uma geração que iria enfrentar o incerto. Malcom Little muda em 1952 o seu nome para Malcom X, simbolizando a sua verdadeira família africana que jamais poderia encontrar. Hoje a letra “X” encontrou outros significados, como o factor X, que assume novas conotações como a jovialidade, a independência, a atração, o perigo e a excitação. <br>

From indicating an uncertain territory, “X” has always been associated to the unknown, being commonly used to point out an error.
