r localizada num espaço específico, ela não é fruto apenas da origem do seu autor, mas é um compósito de experiências, de vivências e de trocas. É fruto ainda do seu tempo, das exigências que este faz ao artista ao confrontá-lo com a História, que fica para trás, mas que pode permanecer como uma referência e como um ponto de partida. Como disse o filósofo espanhol Ortega y Gasset, eu sou eu e as minhas circunstâncias. A arte não vive fora do mundo, mas é parte essencial da sua própria composição e artistas como Manuel Baptista, que buscaram sempre estar adiante do seu próprio tempo, trazem, como marca, o símbolo da constante inquietação, que é uma das principais características da arte contemporânea.</p><p style="font-size: 11px;">Manuel Baptista experimentou formas, técnicas, suportes, linguagens. Experimentou movimentos e experimentou também não ostentar rótulos. Experimentou, de alguma forma, a solidão. E esta inquietude é visível nos desenhos que expõe agora: a mão do artista não para, desliza na superfície criando formas, sugerindo imagens, plasmando sombras. A sua obra, e sobretudo os seus desenhos, podem ser caracterizados pela ideia de desconstrução e de recomposição das superfícies. Há um cruzamento entre uma paisagem apenas sugerida e uma forte tendência ornamental. O ornamento, para o artista, não deve ser reprimido porque o tempo assim o exige. Há um lado solar, mesmo nas obras a preto e branco, que Manuel Baptista não pretende ocultar.</p><p style="font-size: 11px;">Alguns artistas fazem do vazio uma arte, tornando vívido o que não é visível. Os desenhos de Manuel Baptista jogam com as entrelinhas, como os espaços em branco. Mas no seu caso, não é o espaço em branco que determina a imagem. É a presença das linhas, ora robustas, ora delicadas, que preenchem o espaço em branco com as suas inquietações.</p><p style="font-size: 11px;">Mirian Tavares</p></td></tr></tbody></table></td></tr></tbody></table></td></tr><tr><td width="100%" style="overflow: hidden;"><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0" class="deviceWidth" style="border-collapse: collapse; width: 900px;"><tbody><tr><td style="width: 35px;"></td><td style="border-bottom-width: 1px; border-bottom-style: solid; border-bottom-color: rgb(172, 43, 68); padding: 0px 10px 20px 0px;"><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" align="left" border="0" class="deviceWidth" style="border-collapse: collapse; width: auto;"><tbody><tr><td><p align="right" style="font-size: 11px;">The blank space around the drawings<br>is the other side. The side where one comes in.<br>Leonilson</p><p style="font-size: 11px;">Manuel Baptista was born in Faro, what makes him a local artist (something that he has never been). He worked in France and Germany, between the 60s to the 70s, but always participated in the Portuguese artistic life. Art cannot be placed in a specific space; it is not the fruit of the artist’s origin, but a composite of experiments, life experiences and changes. It is the fruit of its time, of the demands that time makes to the artist by confronting him with the History, which stays in the past, but can remain as a reference and a starting point. According to the Spanish philosopher Ortega y Gasset, I am me and my circumstances. Art does not live outside the world, but it is an essential part of its own composition and artists such as Manuel Baptista, who have always tried to be ahead of their time, bring, as a brand, the symbol of a constant restlessness, which is one of the main characteristics of the contemporary art.</p><p style="font-size: 11px;">Manuel Baptista has experimented shapes, techniques, supports, languages. He has experimented movements and experimented to bear no labels. He has experimented, in same way, the solitude. This restlessness is visible in the drawings that now he exhibits: the artist’s hand does not stop, it glides over the surface creating shapes, suggesting images, forming shadows. His work, and mainly his drawings, may be characterized by the idea of deconstruction and recomposition of surfaces. There is a crossing between a slightly suggested landscape and a strong ornamental tendency. The ornament, to the artist, must not be repressed because this way how time wants it to be. There is a sunny side, even in black and white works, which Manuel Baptista does not want to hide.</p><p style="font-size: 11px;">Some artists make art out of the void, bringing to life what is not visible. Manuel Baptista’s drawings play with the line spacing, like the blank spaces. But in his case, it is not the blank space that determines the image. It is the presence of the lines, sometimes robust and other times delicate, that fill the blank space with their restlessness.</p><p style="font-size: 11px;">Mirian Tavares</p></td></tr></tbody></table></td></tr></tbody></table></td></tr><tr><td width="100%" style="overflow: hidden;"><table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" border="0" class="deviceWidth" style="border-collapse: collapse; wid
