Fez também uma especialização em realização na Tisch School of Arts na Universidade de Nova Iorque e o programa de produção Eurodoc. Rodrigo Areias tem desenvolvido ao longo da sua carreira, trabalhos criativos na área de cinema de autor em ficção e documentário, alternando com outros trabalhos em domínios de video-arte e vídeo clips para alguns dos melhores nomes da cena rock Portuguesa (The Legendary Tiger Man, Wray Gunn, Mão Morta, Sean Riley, D3o, etc.) e diversos outros projetos. Como produtor começou a sua carreira em 2001 e desde então produziu e coproduziu mais de 70 curtas, longas, vídeos e documentários. Produziu autores de renome como Edgar Pêra, João Canijo e F. J. Ossang, bem como jovens realizadores como André Gil Mata, João Rodrigues e Jorge Quintela. Tem coproduzido com o Brasil, Reino Unido, França, Alemanha e Finlândia. Como realizador, entre vários filmes destaca-se Tebas (longa-metragem) e Corrente (curta-metragem) com os quais esteve representado em mais de cinquenta festivais internacionais e foi galardoado com uma dezena de prémios. A sua segunda longa-metragem estreou em Competição Oficial no Festival Internacional de Karlovy Vary e foi galardoado com uma Menção Especial. Foi responsável pela produção de cinema de Guimarães 2012 Capital Europeia da Cultura onde se incluem filmes de realizadores como Jean-Luc Godard, Aki Kaurismaki, Peter Greenaway, Manoel de Oliveira, Pedro Costa e Victor Erice.</span><br><br><i>No ano de 1943, durante a II Guerra Mundial, a produtora americana Valerie Lewton chegou a Portugal e casou-se com um actor português que lhe deu a conhecer o conto "O Barão", escrito por Branquinho da Fonseca. Valerie viu nele a história perfeita para um filme de terror, começando, em segredo, as filmagens numa fábrica do Barreiro.<br>Quando a PIDE soube da existência do filme, mandou destruir os negativos. A equipa técnica foi repatriada e os actores portugueses deportados para o Tarrafal, na ilha de Santiago, Cabo Verde, onde morreram torturados na "frigideira".<br>Em 2005, foram descobertas duas bobinas e o guião do filme nos arquivos do cineclube do Barreiro.
