“Transatlántica” combina três projetos: “Plátanos con Platino”, “Braços
Verdes Olhos Cheios de Asa” e “Brazil: System error”, e foi realizado entre
2016 e 2019 na América Latina, onde vivo e trabalho. Através deste corpo de
trabalho, questiono as formas pelas quais a fotografia é utilizada para
representar territórios, e procuro reprogramar a sua influência política na
representação dos territórios.

A partir de fotografias tiradas na floresta “Plátanos con Platino” e
“Braços Verdes Olhos Cheios de Asas”, crio uma natureza que vai buscar as
suas cores às linguagens estéticas da pop e do luxo. Ao fazê-lo, pretendo
destacar o papel da fotografia na construção do imaginário e, ao mesmo
tempo, tentar devolver a esses lugares o valor que eles perderam.

Em “Brazil': System Error ", imagens icónicas do Brasil recolhidas através
de motores de busca são carregadas de mensagens políticas tão poderosas
quanto contraditórias. As imagens muitas vezes estereotipadas, alegres e
coloridas do país foram alteradas, inserindo no código de texto frases
agressivas ditas por Jair Bolsonaro - o atual presidente do Brasil. Essa
alteração digital (glitching) produz interferências visuais através das
quais pretendo explorar a discordância entre os clichês tropicais, que
muitas vezes caracterizam o Brasil, e os seus desvios mais assustadores,
porém também servem para revelar a imagem deficiente do/no poder.

As imagens de “Transatlántica”, foram produzidas utilizando a natureza
tropical e especificidades territoriais da América Latina, e à primeira
vista parecem convidar a desfrutar de viagens e exotismo. Mas o fascínio
que elas podem induzir a uma primeira vista rapidamente parece suspeito -
pois elas são de fato modificadas plasticamente ou até distorcidas. Através
das visões exóticas e digitalmente distorcidas da América Latina, questiono
a ideia da nossa representação mental coletiva de paisagens, que confronto
com fatos concretos de foro político ou económico. “Transatlántica” é uma
tentativa de relatar o fracasso do capitalismo e os limites da nossa
sociedade baseada na imagem.

Os Encontros da Imagem, com mais de 30 anos de existência são uma
Associação Cultural sem fins lucrativos que organiza os Encontros da Imagem
– Festival Internacional de Fotografia e Artes Visuais na cidade de Braga,
Portugal. O festival promove fotografia clássica e contemporânea através da
mostra de trabalhos de autores consagrados e emergentes.

*Sobre a artista:*
Elsa Leydier <http://elsaleydier.com/pt/> nasceu em 1988 em França. Em 2012
após concluir os estudos em línguas, ingressou na École Nationale
Supérieure de la Photographie em 2012. Após terminar o curso, mudou-se para
o Rio de Janeiro, Brasil, onde vive e trabalha atualmente. No seu trabalho
fotográfico, Elsa questiona a fotografia que é utilizada para representar
espaços e territórios icónicos, e tenta representar esses mesmos espaços
através de pontos de vista diferentes e de histórias alternativas. Elsa foi
finalista do prémio Prix HSBC de fotografia em 2018, e premiada como
Talento Emergente nos Prémios Dior Photo Award e no Maison Ruinart/Paris
Photo Prize em 2019. O seu trabalho tem sido apresentado em diversas
exposições internacionais de fotografia tais como, Les Rencontres
Internationales de la Photographie (Arles, França), PHotoEspaña (Madrid,
Espanha), Month of Photo Los Angeles (EUA), Festival Circulation(s), na Le
Réverbère Gallery (Lyon, França), Chez Agnès b. e na Les Filles du Calvaire
Gallery (Paris, França). Elsa teve também várias exposições a solo me
Bogotá, São Francisco, Paris e Lyon. O seu trabalho é representado pela
Intervalle Gallery em Paris.

**Génesis 2:1 *foi o tema escolhido para a 31ª edição dos Encontros da
Imagem - Festival Internacional de Fotografia e Artes Visuais, que se
realizará entre 17 de setembro e 31 de outubro de 2021. Entre as diversas
atividades, o Festival englobará 46 exposições distribuídas por 24 espaços
distintos envolvendo a participação de 62 fotógrafos.

Nunca um tema escolhido, se enquadrou tão bem no contexto que atualmente
Portugal e o mundo vivem, neste início da década de 20. “Génesis 2:1” dá
continuidade ao tema do ano passado. Um ano depois, voltamos também nós e
todo o mundo - em resultado da crise pandémica provocada pelo Covid-19, de
novo, ao confinamento generalizado.

Gerou-se a confusão e o caos. Uma incapacidade coletiva para compreender a
desordem das coisas, confrontando a humanidade com desafios cada vez mais
complexos e exigentes. A sociedade contemporânea está desde há muito,
perante enormes desafios de carácter global: desde as questões relacionadas
com o planeta e os seus problemas ecológicos (perda da biodiversidade,
alterações climáticas - aquecimento e contaminação) até às civilizações que
o habitam, onde muitas delas geram novas desigualdades e indiferença moral
(regimes políticos, religiosos, fronteiras, refugiados, racismo, questões
de género e muitas outras.

Aquilo a que chamamos progresso, não só deixou de coincidir com a
humanização do mundo, como pode acabar por ditar o seu fim. Urge encontrar
soluções para acabar com as desigualdades e indiferença em relação ao
sofrimento de milhões de pessoas. Uma interrogação se pode colocar: que
futuro nos espera? A crise em que vivemos constitui uma oportunidade para
que todos encontremos causas comuns e discutamos as melhores soluções para
o que deva ser feito.

*[EN] “Transatlántica” unifies 3 projects: “Plátanos con Platino”, “Braços
Verdes Olhos Cheios de Asas” and “Brazil : System Error”, made between 2016
and 2019 in Latin America, where I live and work. Through this body of
work, I question the ways in which photography is used to represent
territories and I seek to reprogram their political influence on the
representation of territories. From photographs taken in the forest
“Plátanos con Platino” and “Braços Verdes Olhos Cheios de Asas”, I create a
nature that borrows its colors from pop and luxury aesthetics languages. By
doing so, I aim to highlight the role of photography in the construction of
the imaginary, and at the same time try to give back to those places the
value they have lost. In "Brazil : System Error", iconic images from Brazil
gleaned found from search engines are loaded with political messages as
powerful as they are contradictory. The often stereotypical, happy, and
colorful images of the country were altered, by inserting into their text
code violent sentences said by Jair Bolsonaro — the current president of
Brazil. This digital alteration (glitching) produces visual interferences,
through which I aim to explore the discordance between the tropical clichés
that too often characterize Brazil and its most chilling drifts, but also
to reveal the failing image of / in power. The images of “Transatlántica”,
made of utilize tropical nature and territorial specificities from Latin
America, and first glance they seem to invite to indulge travel and
exoticism. But the fascination they may induce at the first sight quickly
appear as suspect — as they are indeed plastically modified or even
glitched. Through the exotic and digitally bugged views on Latin America, I
question the idea of our collective mental representation of landscapes,
which I confront to concrete political or economic facts. “Transatlántica”
is an attempt to report the failure of capitalism, and the limits of our
society of images.    Elsa Leydier About the curatorship: Encontros da
Imagem, with more than thirty years of existence, is a non-profit cultural
association that promotes annually an International Photography and Visual
Arts Festival in the city of Braga, Portugal. The festival celebrates
classic and contemporary photography and visual arts in general by
showcasing emerging and established artists. About the artist: Elsa Leydier
was born in 1988 in France. After studying languages, she entered the École
Nationale Supérieure de la Photographie in Arles in 2012. Following her
graduation in 2015, she came to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where she currently
lives and works. In her photographic work, she aims to interrogate images
that are used to define iconic places and territories, that she tries to
show from other points of view, through the prism of alternative and lesser
stories. She was a finalist for the Prix HSBC pour la photographie in 2018
and a laureate for the Dior Photo Award for Emerging Talents and for the
Maison Ruinart/Paris Photo Prize in 2019. Her work has been shown in

*Genesis 2:1, was the chosen theme for the 31st edition of Encontros da
Imagem - International Festival of Photography and Visual Arts, which will
take place between September 17th and October 31st, 2021. Among the many
different activities, the Festival will include 46 exhibitions distributed
in 24 different spaces involving 62 photographers. Never has a chosen theme
fit so well into the context of what we, at the beginning of this decade,
are currently going through both in Portugal and the rest of the world.
“Genesis 2:1” gives continuity to last year's theme. One year later, we
all, Portugal and the rest of the world, returned to the widespread
confinement - as a result of the pandemic crisis caused by Covid-19.
Causing confusion and chaos. A collective inability to understand the
disorder of things, confronting humanity with increasingly complex and
demanding challenges. Contemporary society is facing enormous global
challenges for a long time: from issues related to the planet and its
ecological problems (loss of biodiversity, climate change - warming and
contamination) to the civilisations that inhabit it, where many of them
generate new inequalities and moral indifference (political, religious,
borders, refugees, racism, gender issues and many others). What we call
progress, not only no longer matches with the humanisation of the world,
but may also end up dictating its end. There is an urgent need to find
solutions to put an end to the inequalities and indifference that millions
of people are suffering. A question may be asked: what future awaits us?
The crisis in which we live is an opportunity for all of us to find common
causes and discuss the best solutions for what needs to be done.*
