A Galeria Underdogs tem o prazer de anunciar a exposição colectiva “From
Lisboa to the World”, agora com um carácter itinerante, no Maus Hábitos, no
Porto. Inaugurando o ciclo “Outros Portos” que irá decorrer no espaço
cultural ao longo do biénio 2020-21, a mostra reúne um conjunto de obras
únicas, em vários suportes e formatos, de uma apurada selecção de artistas
portugueses.

Agregando um grupo representativo de artistas portugueses com os quais a
Galeria Underdogs tem vindo a trabalhar ao longo dos seus seis anos de
actividade, “From Lisboa to the World” funciona como um complemento
nacional à exposição colectiva “From the World, Made in Lisboa” apresentada
em Abril de 2019, cujo foco recaiu sobre os artistas internacionais que têm
visitado e trabalhado em Lisboa no âmbito do seu programa expositivo.
Tal como os seus congéneres internacionais, esta nova geração de artistas
portugueses – que aqui têm desenvolvido e maturado as suas vozes em
interacção directa com a cidade e o seu público –, reflecte igualmente um
universo de visões autorais em tudo diverso e multidisciplinar, projectando
a partir de Lisboa um conjunto heterogéneo de perspectivas e propostas com
uma dimensão global, materializando assim de forma efectiva o propósito e a
missão da Underdogs.
Se, também à semelhança dos artistas internacionais, o trabalho destes
artistas portugueses expressa interesses, preocupações e objectivos
diferentes, o conjunto de linguagens aqui apresentado não deixa de conter
elementos transversais e/ou tangenciais que as aproximam, estabelecendo
entre elas uma condição dialogante. As obras de Add Fuel e do Estúdio
Pedrita, a despeito das suas diferenças formais e conceptuais, partilham
abordagens que procuram combinar elementos da cultura visual e decorativa
tradicional – em particular a azulejaria de natureza artística ou
industrial – com processos contemporâneos de produção, reinterpretando e
revitalizando todo um património da cultura material portuguesa. Também
Mário Belém partilha com eles algo deste interesse pelo património cultural
português, sobretudo no que toca à sabedoria popular dos provérbios e
dizeres tradicionais. Aproximando a cultura visual popular àquela
contemporânea, a sua obra tem explorado igualmente o paradoxo das falhas de
comunicação numa era em que a informação é soberana mas que peca pelo seu
próprio excesso, um tema que também tem sido alvo da reflexão que
AkaCorleone tem vindo a desenvolver no decurso de uma prática marcadamente
catártica e pessoal. Se as obras destes dois artistas se diferenciam
através de linguagens contrastantes, aproximam-se, por outro lado, através
de um mútuo interesse pelo universo gráfico da comunicação visual,
revelando um fascínio pela justaposição e diálogo entre a representação
visual e a palavra escrita.
Trabalhando de forma muito diferente com a palavra escrita, mas
similarmente empenhada em reflectir sobre a cultura popular contemporânea
através de uma narrativa intensamente intimista, crítica e, tal como no
caso de AkaCorleone, catártica, Wasted Rita tem vindo a estabelecer uma
cumplicidade abertamente confessional com o observador, dando vida a
propostas radicais e incisivas de natureza cénica e performática sobre,
como a própria descreve de forma mordaz, “esta coisinha adorável a que
chamamos sociedade.” Apesar das evidentes diferenças autorais e
estilísticas que os separam, também o projecto ±MaisMenos± do artista
Miguel Januário partilha uma abordagem crítica ao mundo presente, embora
veiculada através de uma perspectiva manifestamente activista que nos
confronta com reflexões incisivas face às assimetrias e contradições
debilitantes presentes no modelo de organização política, social e
económica que dá forma às sociedades contemporâneas.
Procurando explorar uma dimensão social muito diferente através de
exercícios visuais que nos oferecem uma narrativa em aberto, André da Loba,
por sua vez, convida o observador a deixar-se levar pelas possibilidades
interpretativas contidas nos elementos ilustrativos que nos apresenta, de
maneira a compormos, de forma intuitiva ou ponderada, as nossas próprias
histórias. Se a sua obra assenta, de forma clara, numa fértil imaginação
poética, a obra de Teresa Esgaio, apesar de todo o seu evidente realismo,
também bebe de uma fértil poética da imaginação. Trabalhando o delicado
contraste entre luz e sombra, a mão da artista vai dando forma a desenhos
minuciosos e ricamente texturais desenvolvidos com recurso ao pastel seco e
grafite – um processo longo, exigente e exaustivo através do qual vai
retratando tudo aquilo que lhe capta a atenção numa clara sublimação do
intemporal gesto pictórico na era digital.

Celebrando, em suma, a vitalidade e a riqueza heterogénea que diferencia
este conjunto de práticas artísticas, assim como os diversos elementos
temáticos e as abordagens que as aproximam, “From Lisboa to the World” faz
um balanço da actividade da Galeria Underdogs na sua dimensão portuguesa,
mas também expressa uma amostra do actual estado da arte contemporânea de
inspiração urbana na era global. De Lisboa, para o resto do mundo.











*[EN] Underdogs Gallery is pleased to announce the group show “From Lisboa
to the World”, now with an itinerant character, at Maus Hábitos, in Porto.
Inaugurating the “Outros Portos” cycle that will take place in the cultural
venue during the 2020-21 biennium, the show brings together a set of unique
pieces, in a variety of media and formats, by a fine selection of
Portuguese artists. Bringing together a representative group of Portuguese
artists with whom Underdogs Gallery has been working during its six years
of activity, “From Lisboa to the World” acts as a national complement to
the group show “From the World, Made in Lisboa” presented in April 2019,
whose focus fell on the international artists who have visited and worked
in Lisbon in the scope of its exhibitions programme. Like their
international counterparts, this new generation of Portuguese artists – who
have developed and matured their voices here in direct interaction with the
city and its public –, also reflects a diverse and multidisciplinary
universe of authorial visions, projecting from Lisbon a heterogeneous set
of perspectives and proposals with a global dimension, thus effectively
materialising Underdogs' purpose and mission. If, also in similarity to the
international artists, the work of these Portuguese artists conveys
different interests, concerns, and objectives, the ensemble of languages
presented here also contains elements that are transversal and/or
tangential that bring them together, establishing between them a dialoguing
condition. The oeuvres of Add Fuel and Pedrita Studio, despite their formal
and conceptual differences, share approaches that seek to combine elements
of the traditional visual and decorative culture – in particular artistic
or industrial tile work – with contemporary production processes,
reinterpreting and revitalising an entire wealth of Portuguese material
culture. Mário Belém also shares with them something of this interest in
Portuguese cultural heritage, especially in regard to the folk wisdom of
traditional proverbs and sayings. Bringing popular visual culture and
contemporary visual culture closer together, his oeuvre has equally
explored the paradox of communication breakdowns in an era when information
reigns supreme yet suffers from its own excess, a subject which has also
been the target of the reflection that AkaCorleone has been developing in
the course of a markedly cathartic and personal practice. If the work of
these two artists is differentiated by contrasting languages, they draw
closer, conversely, through a shared interest in the graphic universe of
visual communication, revealing a fascination for the juxtaposition and
dialogue between visual representation and the written word. Working in a
very different way with the written word, yet similarly committed to
reflecting on contemporary popular culture through an intensely intimate,
critical and, as in the case of AkaCorleone, cathartic narrative, Wasted
Rita has been establishing an openly confessional complicity with the
viewer, pouring forth radical and incisive proposals of a scenic and
performative nature on, like she herself mordantly describes, “this pretty
little thing we call society.” Despite the evident authorial and stylistic
differences that separate them, the ±MaisMenos± project by the artist
Miguel Januário also shares a critical approach to the present-day world,
albeit conveyed through a manifestly activist perspective that confronts us
with incisive reflections in face of the asymmetries and debilitating
contradictions present in the model of political, social, and economic
organisation that gives shape to contemporary societies. Seeking to explore
a very different social dimension through visual exercises that offer us an
open narrative, André da Loba, in turn, invites the viewers to let
themselves be carried by the interpretative possibilities contained in the
elements he presents, in order for us to compose, in either an intuitive or
pondered way, our own stories. If his oeuvre is clearly based on a fertile
poetic imagination, the oeuvre of Teresa Esgaio, despite all of its evident
realism, also drinks from a fertile poetics of the imagination. Working the
delicate contrast between light and shadow, the artist's hand gives shape
to meticulous and richly textural drawings created with recourse to dry
pastel and graphite – a lengthy, demanding, and exhaustive process through
which she portrays everything that captures her attention in a clear
sublimation of the timeless pictorial gesture in the digital era.
Celebrating, in short, the vitality and the heterogeneous wealth that
differentiates this set of artistic practices, as well as the various
thematic elements and approaches that bring them close together, “From
Lisboa to the World” takes stock of Underdogs Gallery's activity in its
Portuguese dimension, yet also conveys a sample of the current state of
urban-inspired contemporary art in the global era. From Lisbon to the rest
