>

> It is like a small flash of memory that invades us and takes us to revisit times already gone. A bolt of lightning that transports us to the grids of our old maths notebooks. The drawings of a young adolescent who is more concerned with killing time between mathematical equations in the not so distant era of the chalk blackboards. It seems so long ago - sighs - and to accentuate the clichê: it was only yesterday.
>
> Work hard, play harder !!! is the title of an exhibition that revisits these past times, several of them and in a chaotic way, as it is the memory; and does so not in the nostalgia of a lost childhood, but in the darkness of not wanting to take an already pre-defined path. The notebooks and the drawings are symbolic, they are understood as acts of resistance to an equation that is no longer accompanied by the authoritarian voice of the one who teaches, but by the boss, by who could be the boss, or by the one who wants to impose the need of one to you. A set of pieces following small acts of reaction on the capitalisation of what is the working time. The work that pays the bills, that six-legged animal that allows us to continue to buy, to adorn the entrances of our houses in the suburbs of our big cities.
>
> Rik once told me how much he always liked to draw, he emphasised it by saying ‘really’ twice: “Oh, I’ve always really, really liked drawing (…) Oh, I’ve always really, really liked drawing”. This show starts precisely with the idea of drawings that served as an escape to a moment the artist didn’t want to be a part of. Babies grow and they have to work and instead of a classroom they have a job to go, bills to pay and so on. The act of drawing was here understood as an act of resistance. Resisting to what the teacher was teaching and now repeating it by resisting to the dead moments of a museum guard, a cloakroom guy or a spectacle room assistant. The drawings and mostly the act of drawing, became an instrument to not follow an imposed posture, a small gesture of rebellion and a form of not only selling his time to an entity but to sell a profitable time for himself as well. Revisiting adolescence here is not doing it only by copying the gestures of before, but also applying the escapes strategies of other times to these new ones. I would say that the show starts here and then it travels between irony and frustration through the expectations created by a consumerist, capitalised world.
>
> Irony is something transversal to all the works Rik Peeters is presenting at Sismógrafo. The collages combining drawings and found photographies of social events give the motto to this: an expectation the artist wants to run away from combining them with the monstrous imaginary of the figures he is conceiving. Both are representations from his youth, here reinterpreted according to today’s moment. The flashed night photos that intercept this collages: images of adornments present in front of the villas of middle/high classes suburbs, perfect shaped shrubs or insults lost in a wall, accentuate it. A series of images that brings us back to the first times when we were re-discovering our surrounding environment by night, understanding it while having the first blows of independency. And then the sculpture, a six feet man, a human spider petrified. Imagine the potencial of a six feet man in the business world… he would be at least three times faster than others. In a football pitch would reach the ball way easier than all the other 21 players. Would play goddamn hard. Would earn so much that could wear a fancy watch and do a \,,,_ at the same time. Easy. Chill.
>
> Work hard, play harder !!! is constructed in this ambiguity of not really understanding to what the “play” is evoking. If one should work hard and then enjoy life; play hard with friends: laugh, drink and don’t give a damn anymore or if, in opposition, one should work hard, yes, but play even harder: be a player that conquers the ultimate goal. A sneaky spider that smiles with the left side and annihilates with the right one. The meaning of playing remains as the question here, while the artist keeps playing. The artist keep playing with his boss, sneakily drawing on work time, encasing the work shoes or waking up those house adornments at night.
