Johns' early style is perfectly exemplified by the lush reticence of
the large monochrome White Flag of 1955.
The American flag subject is typical of Johns' use of quotidian
imagery in the mid-to late 1950s. As he explained, the imagery derives
from "things the mind already knows", utterly familiar icons such as
flags, targets, stenciled numbers, ale cans, and, slightly later, maps
of the U.S.
In other words, the meaning of the flag in Johns' art suggests the
extent to which the "meaning" of this subject matter may be fluid and
open to continual reinterpretation.

Since the first solo show in 1993, On(e) Painting, held at Galeria
Quadrum gallery, a venue run by artists under Dulce D'Agro leadership
and one of the most relevant art venues during the 70's and 80's in
Lisboa, Joao Felino has been presenting an extensive group of projects
in an ongoing research driven by diverse media. Works on paper,
drawing, collage, painting, photography, sculpture, found objects
based works, video and multimedia, performance, installation, with a
strong emphasis on text based works.
A body of work strongly rooted in a historical and conceptual
framework that takes art also as a problematic category from its
creation and presentation to its reception.
Group Show at Jack presents, another artist-run space in Lisboa, till
now the most recent solo exhibition, drawing from a group of some of
these projects, is the one that basically best describes and
summarizes in its title my work process and methodology in the context
of art practice from all forms of representation, artistically but
also politically, socially, and scientifically. A survey on how
artists working with photography today, for instance, respond to those
issues that are specific to photographic processes even if through
other media, from the stages of execution and production to those of
reception and consumption.
Works that deny the prejudice that recent developments in the process
and practice of photography or painting, have shrunk or narrowed each
medium’s congenial sphere. On the contrary, they have opened a
regenerative space suggesting reflective insights into the complexity
of images and how they are conceived, produced and disseminated.
His most recent solo exhibition Flags of the World was held at MUDE -
Museu do Design e da Moda, from last May the 22nd to August the 31st,
2014, and newspaper paintings ' desenhos preliminares, A Montra, both
in Lisboa.
Upcoming solo exhibitions include Flaggen der Welt, rosalux, Berlin
and All the News That's Fit to Print, first solo show in New York, and
the group show Entre o Sul e o Sueste - Arte Portuguesa de Hoje,
curated by Fernando Francés, Imagomundiart project, Benetton
Foundation, cac – centro de Arte Contemporáneo de Málaga, in 2015.
