A FBAUP criou, enquadrado no i2ADS - Instituto de Investigação em Arte, Design e Sociedade, um Curso de 3º Ciclo em Educação Artística.  
Reconhecendo que a Educação Artística tem permanecido como um campo marcadamente preso nos discursos quer da educação, quer da arte, instaura-se a necessidade de renovar as suas narrativas por uma vinculação à contemporaneidade e à especificidade da Educação Artística enquanto campo de acção e de produção de conhecimento. No mesmo sentido se pretende desvincular a Educação Artística de uma relação privilegiada com as Artes Visuais, expandindo a sua superfície para o plano não disciplinar. A construção de renovadas narrativas e práticas em Educação Artística exige uma análise fundamentada e íntima com a acção e a experienciação, e a clarificação das concepções 
da arte e sua interpretação, bem como um olhar crítico sobre o modo como tais concepções são mobilizadas no discurso e nas práticas educacionais. Este posicionamento coloca-nos num espaço de questionamento em que as tradicionais fronteiras disciplinares se rompem na urgência de deslocamentos teóricos e culturais, onde o discurso hegemónico do ocidente é colocado em crise. 
O  desenvolvimento de projectos, em contextos formais e informais, potencia a investigação necessária à revisão de estratégias e à produção de espaços conceptuais de acção, indispensáveis à produção de um saber que não se fecha nas fronteiras da academia. Inevitavelmente, as tradicionais metodologias de investigação científica são questionadas no sentido de se configurarem novas escritas não confinadas ao texto, abertas, por outro lado, à sua implicação nas acções performativas que lhe dão a substância.
O Curso Doutoral em Educação Artística, organiza-se num ano curricular, onde se enfrentam os questionamentos referidos e se impulsionam as dinâmicas individuais e partilhadas de investigação que se pretendem geradoras das teses de doutoramento que serão desenvolvidas nos dois anos seguintes.
O Doutoramento em Educação Artística envolve-se directamente no trabalho de investigação desenvolvido no interior do Núcleo de Educação Artística do i2ADS — Instituto de Investigação em Arte Design e Sociedade, e convida os seus doutorandos a alojarem os seus projectos de investigação nas linhas de investigação abertas, e com trabalhos em curso, ou a introduzirem outros focos de irreverência. As linhas de investigação do Núcleo de Educação Artística estabelecem campos precisos de preocupações mas abertos a diferentes aproximações: i) - Arte, Educação e Desenvolvimento; ii) - Acção/Investigação em contextos formais e informais. 
De um modo transversal a todos os Núcleos de Investigação do i2ADS inscreve-se uma  linha de investigação relacionada com 'Pensamento contemporâneo e Investigação em Arte e em Educação Artística'.
É numa rede de relacionamento internacional, - de que a criação de uma ‘Network Europeia em Educação Artística’, os ‘Encontro Internacional sobre Educação Artística’, os protocolos de colaboração com Cabo Verde, Moçambique e Barcelona, e os projectos de investigação em curso são expressão -, que o Doutoramento em Educação Artística se configura na actualidade.

The FBAUP has created a 3rd Cycle Degree Programme in Art Education placed within the Institute of Research in Art, Design and Society - i2ADS.
This Programme has been developed with consciousness and recognition that the Art Education has lingered in the discourses of either Art or Education. Therefore it is absolutely necessary to bring forward its specificity as its own field of action and production of knowledge thus renewing its narratives by establishing a bond with modernity. To do so it also means to untie the present privileged relationship with Visual Arts promoting the agoing growth of its field as non-disciplinary one. This demands a careful exposition of the conceptions of art and its interpretation, developing a critical understanding of the way these conceptions rally particular discourses and educational practices. 
This position puts us in a space of questioning in which the traditional boundaries between disciplines are broken, in the urgency of theoretical and cultural shifts, where the hegemonic discourse of the West is placed in crisis. The development of projects in formal and informal contexts powers a necessary research to review strategies and the production of conceptual spaces of action. Necessary for the production of knowledge for the Arts Education that is not evidently encapsulated within the borders of the academy. In this manner the traditional scientific research methodologies are unavoidably questioned to configure new ones, which may be not confined to written text, opened to their involvement in performative actions which are its substance.
The Doctorate Course in Art Education is organized on the first academic year, where these referred questions are brought forward to propel individual and shared dynamics of research that aim to engender the doctorate theses that will be developed within the next two years.
This Phd in Art Education engages directly in the research work conducted within the Center for Arts Education of the i2ADS - Institute for Research in Art, Design and Society - and invites the students to host their doctorate research projects in the fields of investigation already in working progress or to introduce other clusters of irreverence. The areas of interest of this Research Center are established in particular fields of concerns, open to all sorts of approach: i) Art, Education and Development; ii) Action/Research in formal and informal contexts. Transversely to all the centers of research at the i2ADS there is a common area of interest 'Contemporary thought and research in  Art Education'.
The PhD in Art Education is being configured within a network of international relationships through: the creation of an 'European Network for Arts Education'; the 'International Conferences on Arts Education'; the protocols of cooperation with Cape Verde, Mozambique and Barcelona; and the research projects in progress.

Titulares de grau de mestre ou equivalente legal nas áreas de Artes Plásticas, Artes Visuais, Design, Desenho, Arquitetura, História da Arte, Ensino de Artes Visuais, Ciências de Educação e outras áreas afins / Holders of a Master degree or legal equivalent in the areas of Arts, Visual Arts, Design, Architecture, Art History, Visual Arts Education, Sciences of Education and related fields;
2. Titulares de grau de licenciado/a, detentores de um currículo artístico, escolar ou científico especialmente relevante que seja reconhecido pela comissão científica como atestando capacidade para a realização deste ciclo de estudos / Holders of a Graduate Degree, and holders of an artistic curriculum, scholar or relevant scientific production which is recognized by the scientific committee as evidence of ability to complete this course; 
3. Detentores/as de um currículo artístico, escolar, científico ou profissional que seja reconhecido como atestando capacidade para a realização deste ciclo de estudos pela Comissão Científica / Holders of an artistic curriculum, educational, scientific or professional which is recognized by the Scientific Committee as attesting the capacity to carry out this cycle of studies.
