FRONTEIRA
“Limite, extremo que separa dois países; linha de demarcação entre duas
frentes; limite, fim, baliza;”

O encontro e exposição que aqui se propõem pretendem mostrar diferentes
projectos que desenvolvem trabalho fomentando, entre outros, uma reflexão
sobre a noção de “fronteira”.

As fronteiras podem assumir características diversas, visíveis ou
invisíveis, e a maneira como o homem as compreende e se relaciona com elas
é complexa.

Os projectos envolvidos nesta iniciativa, “Cidade de Abrigo” dos ASFP e
grupo M.I.R.A., “Frontiers” do grupo artístico Gold Extra, “Uma terra sem
gente para gente sem terra” exposição de Nuno Coelho e “Pisar a Linha”
análise comentada de Adam Kershaw visam a reflexão sobre esta
problemática.

É a partir da exposição dos seus trabalhos e pontos de vista que esperamos
sensibilizar e envolver mais pessoas em torno desta e de outras questões
relativas, para um papel social mais consciente e activo do indivíduo.

“CIDADE DE ABRIGO”

O contexto de pós modernidade traz ao espaço urbano uma profunda crise de
identificação.

Os antigos paradigmas de análise e compreensão de sociedade e cidade
tradicionais não mais servem ao estudo e investigação dos actuais
fenómenos urbanos. Estes aumentam em dispersão, variedade e
multiplicidade.

Longe da rendição à impossibilidade de manejar tal complexidade, este
projecto pretende ser uma plataforma de confluência do pensamento sobre
espaço físico e social, concretamente no que respeita aos fenómenos
associados à migração e exclusão social.

Na primeira tentativa de aproximação abriu-se o caminho à reflexão, à
observação dos fenómenos sociais e urbanos, através do estímulo à
intervenção aberta em contextos reais formulados em quatro casos de estudo.

Do concurso internacional de ideias Cidade de Abrigo/Hosting City resulta
agora uma exposição pública, uma mostra das propostas de cada participante
de onde salta a complexidade na abordagem geral de que cada um toma para
si como ponto de partida.

Diversas formulações do conceito de problema, metodologias e a variedade
do conceito de solução convertem para uma mostra também ela múltipla e
diversa.

“FRONTIERS”
Grupo Artístico Gold Extra

De forma a compreender o 29 de Setembro de 2005, é preciso jogá-lo. 29 de
Setembro? É a data de um ponto de viragem histórico, em que a «Fortaleza
Europa» se tornou abruptamente visível. «Fronteiras» é um jogo de
computador que permite aos seus jogadores experienciarem a vida numa zona
fronteiriça: como jogador de «Fronteiras» o seu objectivo é alcançar a
fronteira entre Marrocos e Espanha, em Ceuta, e passar em segurança para o
outro lado. Caso falhe, o jogador é enviado de volta para o deserto do
Sahara, com 600 kms a separá-lo de novo da desejada fronteira.

Encaramos a forma deste modo social não só como um trabalho artístico, mas
como um instrumento político e participatório, pois representa uma forma
de comunicação artística, que permite à audiência atingir um novo papel
social.

O jogo não oferece soluções concretas ou julgamentos morais, simplesmente
aumentando a consciencialização e sensibilização através das experiências
sentidas durante o jogo. Os jogadores podem escolher as suas próprias
perspectivas bem como o lado pelo qual querem jogar: refugiado emigrante
ou soldado fronteiriço. A natureza envolvente do ambiente de jogo pretende
encorajar os jogadores a continuar a jogar. Isto ajudará a fixar nas
nossas mentes nomes que ouvimos ser utilizados diariamente na comunicação
social mas dos quais nem nos apercebemos.

“UMA TERRA SEM GENTE PARA GENTE SEM TERRA”
Exposição de Nuno Coelho

A exposição "Uma Terra Sem Gente, Para Gente Sem Terra" é composta por
diversos posters, com desenhos de contorno a preto-e-branco, que convidam
os visitantes a preencher de cor usando os diversos lápis dispostos para o
efeito. Os posters mostram diversos mapas e gráficos, assim como desenhos
realizados a partir de fotografias recolhidas na sua viagem de um mês à
Palestina em 2006 onde teve um contacto íntimo com a complexa situação da
região.

Esta intervenção artística traduz em narrativas as tensões sociais que
fazem parte do quotidiano daquela região onde três continentes colidem,
propondo uma nova abordagem de pensamento sobre o conflito israelo-árabe,
assim como um olhar crítico mas também irónico, que poderá mostrar o
absurdo da situação presente. Essa sensação de absurdo é enfatizada ao
falar da actual situação social e política recorrendo a um imaginário e
uma linguagem infantil. O trabalho vai ao encontro da opinião do autor que
crê que apesar de haver um discurso global sobre a Palestina, poucas
pessoas conseguem ver além das imagens e títulos chocantes gerados pelos
media e compreender os princípios básicos do conflito.

Para além disso torna-se importante questionar se poderá um acto artístico
conter em si imenso significado político sem assumir um determinado ponto
de vista ou sem aspirar a ser transgressor, subversivo ou activista. Tal
como a negação da Filosofia é já de si um acto filosófico, talvez a
tentativa de mostrar um trabalho apolítico seja também ela detentora de
uma forte posição política.

"PISAR A LINHA"
Análise de Adam Kershaw

Hoje poucas guerras são travadas por questões territoriais, mas o conflito
entre Israel e os territórios Palestinianos parece conter todas as causas
tradicionais de conflito: religiosas, económicas, culturais e um sentido
de justificação histórica. Este tipo de luta habitualmente não tem um
"meio termo", sem espaço para um compromisso quando as duas partes lutam
por aquilo que julgam ser como o seu absoluto e inegável direito.

Os posters gráficos realizados por Nuno Coelho para a sua exposição "Uma
Terra Sem Gente para Gente Sem Terra" pretendem criar um discurso visual
com o espectador, simplificando a história complexa da região para uma
forma mais acessível, quase infantil. Através do uso de técnicas simples,
como colorir mapas, podemos localizar a fonte e o trajecto do conflito.

Acompanhando os gráficos criados por Nuno Coelho, Adam Kershaw tentará
analisar o conflito do ponto de vista das fronteiras, tendo como
referência a sua própria experiência na Cisjordânia em 2006, e discutir o
actual conflito e a decisão tomada por Israel de construir uma "barreira
de separação definitiva" em vez de uma fronteira legítima.

«A part that forms the outer edge of something; the line or frontier area
separating political divisions or geographic regions; a boundary.» in
American Heritage Dictionary

The gathering and exhibition that are here suggested intend to display
different projects that develop work by promoting, among others, a
reflection on the notion of «border».

Borders can assume diverse characteristics, visible or invisible, and the
way human beings understand and relate to them is complex.

The projects included in this initiatives, «Hosting City» of ASFP and
M.I.R.A., «Frontiers» of Gold Extra Artistic Group, “A land without people
for a people without land” an exhibition by Nuno Coelho and "Crossing the
Line" an analysis by Adam Kershaw, intend a careful consideration about
this matter and it’s departing from the exhibition of their works that we
expect to create more awareness and get more people involved around this
and other relevant matters for a more conscient and active social part of
the individual.

“HOSTING CITY”

The post modernity context brings to the urban space a deep identification
crisis.

The old paradigms used to analyse and comprehend the traditional society
and city architectures are no longer adequated to the study and
investigation of current urban phenomena. These are growing in geographic
spread, variety and multiplicity.

Far from surrendering to the inability to juggle with that complexity,
this project intends to be a platform of thought about physical and social
space, even more regarding phenomena associated to migration and social
exclusion.

In a first gathering attempt, way for reflection and social and urban
phenomena observation was opened through the stimulation to accessible
intervention in real contexts formulated in four case studies.

>From the international idea contest Hosting City emerges now a public
exhibition, the showing of each participant’s proposals, highlighting the
complexity of the global approach that each one takes for him/her self as
a starting point.

Diverse formulations of the problem’s concept, methodologies and the
variety of the solution concept come together to a show simultaneously
multiple and diverse.

“FRONTIERS”

To understand September 29, 2005, you have to play it. September 29? The
date of a historic turning point, on which the “Fortress Europe” became
abruptly visible. ”Frontiers“ is a computer game that enables its players
to experience life on the borderline: as a player in “Frontiers” your
objective is to race for the Moroccan-Spanish fenceline in Ceuta and make
it safely to the other side. Should you fail, you'll find yourself back in
the Sahara desert with 600 km to go until you make it back to the border.

We view the form of the social mod not only as a work of art, but as a
political, participatory instrument, for it represents a new form of
artistic communication, which enables the audience to take on a new,
social role.

The game does not offer concrete solutions or moral judgments, it simply
raises awareness and sensibility through the experiences made during the
process of play. Players may choose their own perspectives as well as
which side they would like to play for: immigrant refugee or borderline
soldier. The immersive nature of the game environment is intended to
encourage players to play again and again. This will help impose names
into our minds, which we hear used day after day in the media without
realizing it.

“A LAND WITHOUT PEOPLE FOR A PEOPLE WITHOUT LAND”
Exhibition by Nuno Coelho

The exhibition "A Land Without People for a People Without Land" is
comprised of porters, each with a black and white outline illustration,
which visitors are invited to colour using the coloured pencils provided.
The posters display various maps and graphics, and also include material
directly taken from photographs collected by the artist during a month
long trip to Palestine in 2006, during which he had the opportunity to
explore and research the complex situation in the region.

This exhibition produces a visual discourse around the social tensions of
daily life in this region where three continents collide, and proposes a
new approach to exploring the Arab-Israeli conflict. This discourse is
critical, but it is also ironic, and playfully
exposes the absurdity in the current situation. This concept of the absurd
is emphasized by the appropriation of infantile language and iconography,
used to illustrate the reality of the current sociopolitical situation.
The work demonstrates the opinion of the artist that although there is a
global discourse surrounding Palestine, few people can reach beyond shock
images and headlines engineered by the Media and understand the basic
principles of the conflict.

The work also invites us to question whether it is possible for an artwork
to have immense political focus without becoming one-sided, or attempting
to be transgressive, subversive or an act of political activism. Arguably,
denying philosophy is in itself a philosophical act, and so perhaps even
attempting to create artwork that avoids dealing directly with politics is
intrinsically to take a definite political position.

"CROSSING THE LINE"
Analysis by Adam Kershaw

Today, few wars are fought over territory, but the conflict between Israel
and the Palestinian territories seems to entail all of the traditional
causes of conflict: religion, money, culture and the sense of historical
justification. This type of struggle traditionally has no "middle ground",
no room for compromise, as both parties fight for what they see as their
absolute, undeniable right.

The graphic posters made by Nuno Coelho for his exhibition "A Land Without
People for a People Without Land" attempt to create a visual discourse
with the viewer, simplifying the complex history of the area into an
understandable, almost child-like form. Through the use of simple
techniques like map colouring, we can trace the source and route of the
conflict.

Accompanying Nuno's visuals, Adam Kershaw will try to analyse the border
conflict, referencing his own experiences in the West Bank in 2006,
discussing the ongoing conflict and the decision by Israel to construct a
"definitive separation barrier" in place of a legitimate border.
